Bifocal Lenses

Bifocal lenses correct two prescriptions in one lens: in the upper zone and for reading vision in the lower segment. They are a straightforward option for anyone in Uganda who needs correction for both near and far without switching between two pairs of glasses. Optica Uganda offers bifocal lenses across four coating options, fitted into your choice of frame in-store or ordered online.

What are bifocal lenses and how do they function?

Bifocal lenses feature two distinct prescription powers split across a single lens. The main upper portion of the lens corrects your distance vision (for driving or watching TV), while a visible, shaped segment at the bottom provides dedicated magnification for close-up tasks like reading or looking at your phone.

What makes bifocals different from Progressive lenses?

Bifocals feature a visible line separating your two prescriptions, giving you a wider, immediate reading zone but skipping the middle "intermediate" distance. Progressives are entirely line-free and offer a smooth gradient through all distances. If you prefer a completely seamless look without lines, explore our progressive lenses.

Can I add modern digital and sun protection to my bifocals?

Yes, you absolutely can! Traditional bifocals can be heavily upgraded for the modern world. You can add specialized filters from anti-glare to our light-adaptive coating to turn your bifocals into sunglasses instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to your most common questions

What are the main types of bifocal lenses?

Optica Uganda offers four bifocal lens types: Standard Clear, Clear Anti-Reflective, Photochromic, and All-in-One (Photochromic + Anti-Reflective). All share the same dual-zone correction - distance upper, reading lower. The difference is in the coating. Prices start from UGX 110,000 per pair.

Are bifocal contact lenses available at Optica Uganda?

Optica Uganda does not currently stock bifocal contact lenses. We carry a full range of contact lenses including daily and monthly options. Visit any Optica Uganda branch and speak to an optician for advice on the best correction option for your needs.

How are bifocal lenses different from progressive lenses?

Bifocal lenses have a visible line dividing two zones - distance and near. Progressive lenses are line-free and add a third intermediate zone for screen distance. Bifocals offer a wider reading area; progressives offer a seamless look across all distances. Both are available at Optica Uganda.

Can bifocal lenses be fitted with photochromic or anti-glare coatings?

Yes. Optica Uganda offers bifocal lenses with anti-glare, photochromic (light-adaptive), and combined coatings. The All-in-One option includes both UV darkening and anti-glare in a single dual-zone lens. See the photochromic lenses page for more on light-adaptive coatings.
